As the American Care Act phases in its requirements, some U.S. companies might treat certain employees differently. Under the law, smokers can be charged up to 50 percent more than nonsmokers for health insurance.

    How far away are we from charging people more who eat sugar? What about extra cost for treatment needed because of drinking or drug use? This opens up more than a can of worms.

    The practice of discriminating against smokers is going to open up a can of worms. Smoking is a personal action that does not have to impede on the other workers and discrimination of any kind for any reason is going to be grounds for a lawsuit. Smoking while it does add more to the health system, people are still within their legal right to do it without having to be discriminated against.
